More than 250 people joined the non-profit STOP CANCER at its annual wine tasting event on Saturday April 20 at Tiato’s in Santa Monica. STOP CANCER benefits early cancer research at UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center, USC Norris and City of Hope National Medical Center.
“The government doesn’t have enough funding to give all of these wonderful researchers the money they need to pursue their dreams and their thesis,” said Bette Bergsman. “In order to get significant grants they need to build a body of work to show the big donors that it’s valid. So we are in a sense planting the seeds.”
Over the past 26 the organization has raised $58 million toward 147 cancer researchers including Dr. Charles Sawyers who was recently appointed one of six new members to the National Cancer Advisory Board by President Obama. Founded in 1988 by Dr. Armond Hammer, the group can point to several breakthroughs in cancer research that came about in part from its funding.
