Participants in the Wanderlust Festival’s Yoga in the City on the Santa Monica Pier take part in a group yoga session.
The one-day Wanderlust yoga and music festival drew thousands to the Santa Monica Pier on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in June.
The event known as Yoga in the City also took place this year in San Francisco, Chicago and New York leading up to the big three-day Squaw Valley festival expected to draw up to 8,000 people July 18-21.
This year marks the group’s 5th year offering free yoga events throughout the country.
“Santa Monica is definitely a hub of yoga,” said Jess Roach, grassroots marketing director. “There are so many wonderful teachers and yoga studios here that we felt like we needed to have a presence. And the response has been overwhelming.”
Roach said there’s something about practicing yoga in a group helps build community.
“It’s really exciting to have somebody right next to you breathing and going through the same motions as you, either the same pleasure or discomfort that you’re going through,” she said.
Along with yoga instruction and musical acts, the event featured natural food vendors and opportunities to get involved with local yoga studios. According to Roach, this year was the biggest Santa Monica event yet.
