A lot of restaurants boast authentic Italian cuisine. At Locanda Portofino on Montana Avenue there’s absolutely no denying it. Best friends and business partners Florestano Caracciolo and Alberto Ferrari run the restaurant with old school Italian elegance so that it’s been a staple on the block since 1995.
Caracciolo, who also serves as head chef, said he learned to cook from his mother growing up in Southern Italy. To the satisfaction of the locals who’ve made Locanda an institution over the years, Carraciolo says the key is consistency.
“A hundred percent consistency in the quality of what we deliver has been proven over time, it is very clear to us due to the ever increasing numbers of loyal customers that they appreciate our efforts.” he said.
Dining at the quaint Locanda Portofino is truly an experience. Immaculately dressed multi linguistic waiters offer expert opinions on selecting one of their impressive Italian or Domestic wines from the restaurant’s newly remodeled wine cellar, just off the dining room. Ferrari is an expert sommelier and personally chooses the wines before having weekly tasting sessions with the staff and teaching them about the acquired vintage.
While they certainly could have expanded to another location based on their success, the pair has chosen instead to remain loyal for now to their unique flagship restaurant in part because they have a profound passion for quality. Locanda serves only the freshest ingredients, certified organic and natural produce, grass-fed beef and pasta direct from Naples.
Don’t be surprised on any given night if you spot an A list celebrity quietly dining in the corner, Locanda Portofino has become a trusted safe haven due to the discretion and privacy of this first class establishment.
“We’ve been true to what we do,” Caracciolo said. “we care about what people eat. This is how I live my life. I’m very careful of how I eat. Everything has to be natural and organic and I want my customers to have the same.”
