For a teacher, there’s perhaps no greater honor than the success of a student. Chef Eric Crowley of Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom has been teaching home cooks how to improve their skills in the kitchen or build careers in the culinary field for the past 11 years.
Earlier this year, he was pleased to see one of his students, Dara Yu, come in second place on the Fox Channel’s Junior Master Chef competition, and a few weeks later he was shocked to hear the top-place finisher Alexander Weiss tell a reporter he too learned a lot from Crowley’s videos on the Internet.
“That does feel really good,” Crowley said on our recent visit to the small restaurant-caliber kitchen in West Los Angeles, where Crowley conducts all of the classes himself. “Really what’s fun for me, whether it’s the kids in the summer or adults, seeing that light bulb go off in their heads when they get that ‘ah hah’ moment and they understand the concepts and what I’m trying to teach them.”
The school offers a wide range of courses for the average home cook from grilling to baking and all things in between. There’s a vegetarian course, a sauce course, and for the perfect date night, Crowley puts on a cooking instruction that partners can share and then enjoy afterward with a glass of wine.
Looking to step up your game even further? Through his 18-week Master Chef Program, Crowley has helped hundreds of students begin careers in the restaurant industry. The course, while not as intensive, is designed to mimic the techniques Crowley was taught at the Culinary Institute of America.
“If they are truly passionate about it, I can definitely give them the tools to get them started,” Crowley said.
Coming up later this year, Crowley plans to release a commercial spice blend, along with a cookbook for couples in time for Valentine’s Day. The San Fernando Valley native also has his sights on his own television program. You can watch his televisions appearances on KCAL 9 and KTLA 5 on his website.
