Amounting to the first father-daughter fitness team, long-time Santa Monica resident Lou Ferrigno has teamed up with his daughter Shanna to produce a new 90-day workout program called Incredibly Fit.
To promote the program now available on DVDs and the Internet, the Ferrigno family hosted free weekly workout sessions every Saturday for six weeks this summer on the end of the Santa Monica Pier. Hundreds of people turned out to stretch, lunge and press their way into shape. Shanna said she was overwhelmed by the response.
“Dad and I are so excited,” she said. “It’s nice to see it coming to life because everything is on-line. We want to do these all over the country connecting with people.”
After the final workout, Shanna sat down with us to talk about her father’s legacy and the type of exercise program they wanted to promote. With so many different options out there, the pair aimed for a program that would build up slowly rather than burn people out too quickly.
“Some workout programs are like a sprint, but slow and steady wins the race,” Shanna said. “We designed ours so that with every DVD it gets harder.”
Incredibly FIT is a customized 12-week advanced body toning and weight loss program inspired by Lou Ferrigno and hosted by fitness director Mike Dunlavy. Training comes in a collection of class-style videos. Education is provided through articles and videos from Lou, his family, and the Ferrigno Fit staff. All this is monitored by certified dietitians and fitness trainers.
“The 12 weeks are really an education to be your own personal trainer,” Shanna said.
Growing up the daughter of a bodybuilder and star of The Incredible Hulk, Shanna said she rebelled against fitness at a young age, but as she got older realized the virtues. After working as a television producer she became a personal trainer before launching Ferrigno Fit with her father. Today every member of their immediate family is a certified trainer.
“I was a fat kid because I rebelled. I was always against working out,” she said. “But then I just look at him and his longevity and lifestyle and I just love it. Once you help people and you see how much they change by you helping them, you’re hooked.”

Q&A with Lou Ferrigno
Q: What does it mean for you to team up with your daughter on this project?
A: Shanna and I created Ferrigno FIT together. We designed Incredibly FIT by Ferrigno FIT, our 12 week program, to help people all over the world lose weight and tone. We have had amazing success. We are a great team and the only father/daughter fitness team out there. It’s been a great time.
Q: How is Ferrigno Fit different from other workout programs on the market?
A: Incredibly FIT by Ferrigno FIT is different than any other program out there because of the personalization you get with the program. The 90 day program includes customized articles, meal plans and fitness videos that work with you mentally, physically and spiritually.
Q: What’s the biggest way fitness has changed since you began bodybuilding? Back in the day would you ever think of doing yoga or shadow boxing?
A: I have never done yoga. Yoga and boxing were around many decades before I even began bodybuilding. I will say what has changed in bodybuilding is the look of the guys competing now. The symmetry is lacking with the guys today. The art of building has diminished in my opinion.
Q: What attracted you Santa Monica and why have you made it your home for so many years?
A: California is opposite from everything I came from in Brooklyn. I always envied people that lived in the sun every season and had a beach nearby. When I moved here in the 70’s it was a small beach town. I like that Santa Monica doesn’t have a pretentious feel to it. I have been proud to be part of the community for the last 35 years with my kids and wife Carla.
