It was no accident the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce scheduled its annual New Heroes Celebration on September 11th. Fire Chief Scott Ferguson drew a direct connection from the men and women honored at Thursday’s event to those 343 first responders who gave their lives at the World Trade Center.
He said every firefighter and first responder understands that any day they could risk their lives. They draw strength from the sacrifices made that day, he said.
“People might say there aren’t as many fires as there are today, and they’d be right. But it only takes one,” Ferguson said. “And the smoke faced by firefighters today is far more toxic than the fires of a generation before.”
Santa Monica firefighters receiving a “new heroes award” included Jeffery Adams, Jeff Cusick, Andrew Klein, evan McManus, Armando Reyes, Eric Wickland, Jason Silva, Benjamin Braun, Sylvia Moreno. Police officer honors went to Michael Castruita, David Wang, Lewis Gilmour, Barclary Bell and Franki Fisher.
Police chief Jacqueline Seabrooks drew special attention to the officers who responded and eventually took down a lone gunman in 2013 at Santa Monica City College. Police officers receiving commendation as “new heroes” included Michael Castruita, David Wang, Lewis Gilmour, Barclary Bell and Frankie Fisher.
