After reading a book about the Holocaust, 11-year old 5th grader Fiona Engstad successfully convinced the author to visit her Topanga Elementary School.
After reading “Determined”, the recently released and acclaimed book by Dr. Avraham Perlmutter Fiona was inspired to share the story with her school. The book details the remarkable story of survival and human kindness through the eyes of a young man during the Holocaust.
“One Friday, after school, I picked up the book from our coffee table and started reading it. I read all weekend and by Sunday I had completed the book, and brought it into school on Monday to show my teacher and principal,” says fifth-grader at Topanga Elementary School Fiona Engstad. “It was just as much about the good in people as it was about the bad. I wanted to find a way to get the author to visit my school.”
After just a glance at some of the stories in the book, Topanga Elementary School Principal Steve Gediman agreed, and the two conspired to invite Dr. Avraham Perlmutter to visit the school.
“I’m so pleased that Dr. Perlmutter agreed to come to our school to speak to our upper grade students. Our students have the honor of not just meeting a published author, but an eyewitness to many of the great and terrible chapters of twentieth century history. When Fiona told me that she was reading Dr. Perlmutter’s book and that she wanted to arrange a school visit, I shared this news with my teaching staff right away. They were as excited as I was, and Fiona’s teacher quickly got a donation that enabled all of her fifth grade students to obtain and read a copy of the book before the author’s visit,” says Mr. Gediman.
Determined author, Dr. Avraham Perlmutter.
“As we all know, the remaining survivors of the Holocaust will not be with us forever, so we are indeed fortunate that our students will have this valuable time with Dr. Perlmutter. History aside, real life lessons of fighting prejudice, discrimination and injustice are of vital importance for our youth, and I’m thankful that we can share these important lessons with our students.”
Determined author, Dr. Avraham Perlmutter what did the author think of this lovely but unusual invitation? “I was very happy to hear that an 11-year old girl from Topanga – with no connection to the Holocaust – was so inspired by my story that she felt compelled to share it with her school,” says Dr. Perlmutter.
“It is wonderful that twenty-five of her 5th grade classmates will be able to study and learn from my experiences. I believe it is important for students to hear a first-hand account of the Second World War. But more than that, the children’s interest reinforces my belief that this book is for everyone and its themes are universal: that people should help others in need and they should be determined to pursue their education as far as possible in order to be successful in their future.”
Dr. Perlmutter is scheduled to attend Topanga Elementary School this coming Monday, April 20th, and meet Fiona and Principal Gediman, as well as read to the upper classes and garner their thoughts on his remarkable story.
