Along with giving out awards to local businesses for their sustainable practices, the city of Santa Monica celebrated this week 20 years of making environmental sustainability a priority.
The 2015 Sustainable Quality Awards were held once again this year at the Le Meridien Delfina Hotel. What began in 1995 as a small way to recognize some minor achievements has turned into full blown gala, which sets the bar for environmental conservation and social responsibility.
Each year the Santa Monica chamber of commerce along with the city’s office of sustainability honors those local businesses conducting themselves most ethically and with an eye toward conservation.
This year receiving the individual stewardship award was Dean Kubani, manager of the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and Environment.
“It’s fantastic to have an opportunity to look back at what you’ve accomplished,” Kubani said. “I’ve seen since the early 1990s this concept of sustainability go from something you only heard from people wearing tie-dye t-shirts to the mainstream.”
Keynote speaker Eric Corey Freed, Vice President of the International Living Future Institute, entertainment with a humorous take on sustainable building practices. He said all we need to do is look toward nature for our answers in architecture.
“We have 10 billion years of research and development right at our fingertips and all we have to do is open our eyes,” Freed said.
Grand prize winners included Shore Hotel, Locanda del Lago and Capital Intelligence Associates.
Individual stewardship awards went to Alchemie Spa , Community Corporation of Santa Monica, Hulu, Le Meridien Delfina Hotel, Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, Red Bull North America, St. Monica Catholic Community, Santa Monica Hybrid, Santa Monica Seafood and SP Plus.
