A Democratic-controlled House of Representatives committee has since 2019 been seeking documents sent to tax officials by the former Republican president between 2015 and 2020.

But unlike all tenants of the White House since the 1970s, Donald Trump has always refused to release his tax returns and has fought hard in court to block Congressional demands.

After several episodes, a federal appeals court finally authorized tax officials last week to hand over the documents to the commission, which could happen just before the Nov. 8 midterm elections.

The real estate mogul filed a final emergency appeal with the United States Supreme Court.

In accordance with its procedures, it suspended the transfer on Tuesday while waiting for elements to decide the merits. He asked the commission to present its arguments by November 10 and make its decision clear.

Although it has been profoundly changed by Donald Trump, the high court has made several setbacks on the matter, most notably in 2020 authorizing the transfer of financial documents to a New York judge hearing its affairs.

The real estate mogul’s lack of transparency has made his fortune a campaign argument, fueling years of speculation about the size of his fortune or conflicts of interest.
