The iPhone mini line only lasted two generations. There was the iPhone 12 mini followed by the iPhone 13 mini, but then Apple went in the opposite direction and launched a larger iPhone 14 Plus, instead of the iPhone 14 mini. While fans of compact phones may regret this decision, it seems like it might have been the right one.
Modern Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) a report (Opens in a new tab) – via telephone circuit (Opens in a new tab) – Tracked iPhone 14 series supply units, and found that panel shipments for the iPhone 14 Plus over the past 11 months are 59% higher than they were during the same period last year for the iPhone 13 mini.
Now, that number won’t be exactly the same as the number of units for each model already sold, but Apple won’t be ordering more boards than it needs or expects. So it seems somewhat conclusive that the iPhone 14 Plus is selling much better than the iPhone 13 mini at this point in its life.
The obvious consequence of this is that there is not as much appetite for small phones as compared to large phones. Of course, some people still buy compact phones, so it’s a pity that they have increasingly few options.
This report also found that panel shipments for the iPhone 14 series are 2% higher than they were for the iPhone 13 line at this point last year, so the new phones will likely sell marginally better as a whole.
It’s not all good news for the iPhone 14 Plus
While the iPhone 14 Plus seems to do a lot better than the iPhone 13 mini, it still doesn’t seem to be a sales success, as the Pro models seem to be the best sellers by far.
iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 36% share of iPhone 14 series shipments, iPhone 14 Pro has 28%, iPhone 14 has 25%, and iPhone 14 Plus has 11%.
Compared to their predecessors, this is a 23% increase for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, a 22% increase for the iPhone 14 Pro, and a 36% decrease for the iPhone 14. So it seems that people have an appetite to buy the best phones. They can get it now. Then again, this change is likely to have to do with Apple introducing the somewhat uninspired iPhone 14 as anything else.
There is no iPhone 13 Plus to compare the current model with, but if the plate shipments for the iPhone 14 are down 36% compared to the iPhone 13, yet it still charges more than twice as many plates as the iPhone 14 Plus, it It doesn’t paint a very rosy picture for Plus.
As such, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Plus line didn’t last long, just as the Mini line did. Leaks indicate that we will get at least the iPhone 15 Plus, but in fact it may be cheaper than the current model, in an attempt to make it sell better.
