Speculation is rife about who the septuagenarian will nominate as his running mate against Democrat Joe Biden in November’s presidential election.
Among the names in circulation: Senators Tim Scott and JD Vance and New York official Elise Stefanik. But some rumors also mention his last opponent in the Republican primaries, Nikki Haley.
“Nikki Haley is not one of the people I would consider for vice president,” the Republican nominee said on her social network, curtailing narrow speculation.
“But I wish him all the happiness in the world!”, she added.
The choice of former US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, whom Donald Trump has long nicknamed “Sparrow Brain”, would have been surprising.
But the former South Carolina governor is popular among moderate and independent Republican voters who voted for Joe Biden, who might otherwise turn away from Donald Trump.
Asked by AFP, Donald Trump’s entourage declined to provide details of the septuagenarian candidate’s desired profile.
“Anyone who says they know who or when President Trump will pick his vice president is lying,” one of his advisers said. “Until that person’s name is Donald Trump.”
