In a recall report, NHTSA said the affected BMWs could be at increased risk of a “thermal accident” if fluid enters the water pump’s electrical plug connector and causes a short circuit. The problem is linked to “insufficiently tight sealing of the water pump,” according to the document.
BMW filed the recall report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a week ago. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has since tweeted about the issue.
Affected BMW customers should receive an email notification about the recall and instructions on how to fix their vehicles in early October, the recall report said.
“As of August 2024, BMW is aware of approximately 18 customer complaints, concerns or field cases in the U.S. market related to or potentially related to the issue identified in this report,” BMW said in a recall timeline. “BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.”

Fixing the problem with the water pump connector will require a trip to a BMW center.
The personnel will inspect the water pump and plug connector to see if they need to be replaced. The recall report states that a shield will also be installed to “drain any fluid that may drip onto the pump from the air intake chamber into the positive crankcase ventilation system.”
Chicken parts have been withdrawn from the market due to the risk of contamination with foreign bodies.
This service will not cost any money to the owners of the affected BMW vehicles.
The BMW Group produces several million vehicles each year across its various brands. In 2023, it announced production of 2.34 million BMW vehicles and around 321,400 other vehicles under its other brands.
