Russian authorities on Monday arrested Vladimir Kara-Murza, a prominent Kremlin critic and politician, who wrote columns for the Washington Post protesting the Russian war in Ukraine and human rights abuses.
Kara Morza was arrested outside his home in Moscow, on the same day that CNN aired Interview He predicted that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would lead to the downfall of President Vladimir Putin’s government.
Kara Morza is a longtime Putin critic who has survived two poisonings he says the Kremlin orchestrated in retaliation for his comments.
His wife, Evgenia Kara-Morza, confirmed his arrest in a tweet late Monday. “The Russian authorities twice tried to kill my husband for calling for punishments for thieves and murderers, and now they want to throw him in prison because he called their bloody war a war”, I wrote. “I demand the immediate release of my husband.”
Kara Morza is a longtime classmate of the late Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov. He is a former candidate for the Russian Parliament and served as the deputy leader of a political party, People’s Freedom Party. He played a key role in adopting sanctions against Russian human rights violators in the United States, the European Union, Canada and Britain.
