(CBS Detroit) A Delta Air Lines flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted early Wednesday morning after passengers were served spoiled food.
A Delta spokesperson confirmed that Flight 136 was diverted to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport due to the problem.
Officials said part of the plane’s main chicken meal had spoiled, and medical crews treated the affected passengers when the plane landed in New York at about 4 a.m.
There were 277 passengers on board, but Delta officials have not said how many passengers ate the spoiled food. A source familiar with the situation told CBS New York that about 70 passengers became ill after eating the meal.
In addition, sources said some of the food was covered in black mold. One passenger said another passenger on the plane said he had chicken “and didn’t finish it because it was too sour.”
“Delta’s food safety team has engaged with suppliers to immediately isolate the product and begin a full investigation into the incident,” said Lisa Hanna, Delta’s corporate communications spokesperson. “This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay to their flights.”
All sick passengers refused further medical treatment.
A Delta spokesperson told CBS News late Wednesday that in response to the incident, “out of an abundance of caution,” the airline “modified inflight meal service on a number of international flights” on Wednesday.
The spokesperson added that only the pasta option was offered to economy class passengers on about 75 international flights.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been notified of this issue because Delta Flight 136 is an international flight.
Passengers were given food and hotel vouchers, and the flight was scheduled to depart from John F. Kennedy Airport at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

After the plane landed at Heathrow, six flight attendants were examined by medical staff. Delta said the flight attendants became ill after smelling a foul odor in the cabin. None of the 229 passengers on board were affected.
The airline said this diversion from last week and the diversion related to spoiled food were not related.
