Are smartphone makers out of ideas?

Over the years, cell phones have come in many shapes and sizes. The mobile phone market has evolved dramatically since its inception in 1973, from bulky phones with antennas and flip-up phones, to modern Internet-connected devices.

Since then, phones have become more than just tools with which people can play games. It’s our calendar, our cameras. In many ways, they are central to the way we live our lives, and we have developed a dependence on them.

But innovation in the smartphone industry seems to have reached its peak. Besides flashy cameras and more efficient chips, phone makers are struggling to find ways to entice consumers the same way they did years ago.

“We’re now living in this kind of sea of ​​smartphone sameness,” said Ben Wood, senior analyst at technology research firm CCS Insight.

“I think we’ve moved to a point now with cell phones where people aren’t so quick to say, ‘I really want to get this new phone,’” Wood said. “In a lot of cases, it’s almost a difficult purchase.”
