During a recent interview with the Australian Channel 10 talk show The projectAustralian-born Margot Robbie had a brief memory slip from home while promoting the upcoming Warner Bros. movie Barbie in which you play the titular character.
when The project Co-host Sam Taunton mentioned that the word “Barbie” doesn’t always refer to the iconic doll in Oz, Robbie asked, “What do you mean here?” Shocked, others in the studio exclaimed, “Barbecue!”
“Oh!,” Ruby exclaimed, covering her face amidst lots of gentle laughter. Explaining her momentary defeat, Ruby says, “I’m a Barbie now, I can’t even… You’re right, Barbie, you have a Barbie.” She added, “By the way, I blame jet lag. Don’t blame the blonde hair, I blame jet lag.”
The term “Barbie” was popularized outside of Australia in a series of 1980s television advertisements by Tourism Australia introduced by Crocodile Dandy himself, Paul Hogan, who spoke of slipping “extra shrimp on Barbie”.
on The projectit is noted that there are no promotional links for Barbie and “Barbie” during the film’s tour of Australia, of which Robbie said, “I’m terribly sorry we didn’t exist, now that I’ve mentioned it. What a missed opportunity… Grrr, I’m really upset we didn’t do something like that.” chimed in Barbie director Greta Gerwig, “We’ll make you grill next.”
Barbiewhich in fairness had a very aggressive marketing campaign without the Oz Barbecue Ties, began its international rollout on July 19 and headed to North America on July 21.
