“Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set,” Radcliffe said in a statement. “I have particularly fond memories of him keeping our spirits up in ‘Prisoner of Azkaban’, when we were all hiding from the pouring rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and making jokes to keep our spirits up. I feel incredibly lucky to have met him and work with him. I am deeply saddened by his passing. He was a wonderful actor and a wonderful man.”

While Coltrane will forever be known as Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” films, he has also been a member of the James Bond franchise, appearing in 1995’s “GoldenEye” and “The World Is Not Enough” in 1999. More recently Coltrane returned to his “Harry Potter” roots and appeared at a special 20th anniversary reunion for HBO Max “Return to Hogwarts” alongside Radcliffe and other stars such as Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

“The legacy of the films is that my children’s generation will show them to their children,” Coltrane said in the special. “So you can watch it in 50 years, easily. I won’t be here, unfortunately, but Hagrid will.”

Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the “Harry Potter” films, wrote, “Sadness over the death of Robbie Coltrane. Hagrid was my favorite character! Robbie brilliantly captured Hagrid’s warmth, sense of home, and unconditional love for his students and magical creatures. Thanks for the laughs. I miss you Robbie.” Sending love to your family.”

Controversial “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling Coltrane separately honored her with a Twitter post, writing, “I’ll never remotely know anyone like Robbie again. He was an incredible talent, a complete one, and I was so lucky to know and work with him and make my head laugh With him.
