Donald Trump’s campaign team says it was hacked

Republican candidate Donald Trump’s campaign said on Saturday that it was the victim of a hack, accusing “foreign sources” of leaking internal communications and a file on former presidential aide JD Vance.

Trump’s team has insisted that Iran is behind the plot, with Politico previously reporting that it obtained emails containing information about the Republican campaign from a source who declined to identify himself.

“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, with the intent to interfere in the 2024 election and sow chaos in our democratic process,” said Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign team.

Cheung pointed to an incident report released by Microsoft this week that said Iranian hackers “sent a phishing email to a senior presidential campaign official in June.”

Among the information told to Politico: JT Vance, Donald Trump’s vice president, will be his running mate if the Republican Party picks the nominee in November.

In 2016, the emails of the Democratic National Committee were also hacked, with the leak revealing internal communications specifically related to Hillary Clinton, the party’s nominee to take on Donald Trump.

The billionaire, who won the presidential election that year, was criticized for promoting the data breach, which he attributed to Russia.
