EA returns to MMA with UFC 5

EA announced a return to mixed martial arts video games with UFC 5 in a stripped-down tweet promising more information in September.

“Coming soon” reads the tweet below, which also includes a tagline.

EA Sports’ UFC series of games is based on the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and began with EA Sports UFC in June 2014. It was the first UFC game since THQ sold the license to Electronic Arts.

EA Sports UFC 2 was released in March 2016, before EA Sports UFC 3 launched in February 2018. Then EA Sports UFC 4 was released in August 2020, leaving the series quiet for the past three years. IGN’s 8/10 review called UFC 4 a “largely iterative sequel that tightens up some of its looser parts, makes some clever tweaks here and there, and doesn’t rock the boat too much”.

In the past month, EA has undergone major internal changes that have split off EA Games and EA Sports, with the former rebranded as “EA Entertainment” in a sign that EA intends to expand beyond gaming where possible. Cam Weber, who exited EA Football, continues to lead EA Sports.
