Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday its sales rose 1 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier, led by a 5 percent increase in truck sales.
Ford said its truck sales, which include pickups and trucks, totaled 308,920 vehicles during the period, the company’s best second-quarter performance for the segment since 2019. Total F-Series sales were 199,463 vehicles.
Ford’s total electric vehicle sales in the second quarter were 23,957, up 61%. The automaker said its electric vehicles, particularly the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, are attracting new customers to the company.
Meanwhile, hybrid vehicle sales totaled 53,822, up 56% and setting a new quarterly sales record for Ford since it began offering hybrid models more than 20 years ago, the company said. Automakers including Ford are counting on hybrids to ease the transition to electric vehicles and help meet stringent federal fuel-efficiency standards.
The update comes a day after General Motors, Ford’s rival in the city, reported a 0.6 percent rise in second-quarter sales compared with a year earlier. General Motors said its total sales reached 696,086 vehicles, its highest quarterly sales level since the fourth quarter of 2020.
Even the modest increases in sales from both Ford and GM beat expectations for the overall market. Auto industry forecasters, including Cox Automotive and Edmunds, expect second-quarter industry-wide sales to remain roughly flat compared with last year.
