Plane crash in Brazil: 62 bodies recovered from the crash site

The plane crash is the worst in Brazil since 2007, when A TAM Express plane crashed and caught fire at Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo.Resulting in the death of 199 people.

At this stage, it is still unknown what caused the ATR 72-500 to crash.

Authorities said the flight data recorders had been found.

Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR said it would cooperate with the investigation.

According to flight tracking website Flightradar24, Flight 2283 took off from Cascavel at 11:56 local time (14:56 GMT) on Friday and was scheduled to arrive at 13:40.

The last signal received from the plane was about 20 minutes before it was scheduled to land.

The Brazilian civil aviation agency said the plane, built in 2010, was “in good operational condition, had valid registration and airworthiness certificates.”

She added that the four crew members who were on board the aircraft at the time of the accident were all legally licensed and had valid qualifications.

The Obican Cancer Hospital in Cascavel told BBC Brazil that two trainee doctors at the hospital were among the passengers who died.

Local residents witnessed the moment the passenger plane crashed, while others described the damage to their homes.

Luis Augusto de Oliveira told Reuters that he, his wife and their maid were at home when “suddenly we saw the plane explode in my backyard.”

“At the moment of impact, we thought it was a helicopter that had broken down, because of the noise,” he said.

He added that all those in the house were unharmed, and although there was some damage, it was “the least possible, and it was material. I just have to thank God for the way the plane crashed.”
