Los Angeles (KABC) — Raul Porto Sr., founder of the beloved Porto Bakery A café and café with locations in Southern California has died. He was 92 years old.
Raul Sr. died peacefully on Wednesday “surrounded by his loving family,” according to A Post on the bakery’s Instagram page.
“Raul Sr. was an extraordinary man. He and his wife, Rosa, founded Porto Bakery out of the kitchen of their home, where they sold cakes and pastries to friends and family. Raul Sr. helped out whenever he could, even while working at another local bakery. After several years, he was able to Joining Rosa full-time, he dedicated himself to growing their business, and through their hard work, humility and dedication, they transformed a small family endeavor into a cherished community treasure.”
Rosa Porto, founder of the beloved Porto Café and Bakery, has died at the age of 89, the family announced.
His wife, Rosa, died in 2019 at the age of 89. The couple retired several years ago to devote their lives to their family, according to the Instagram post.
“To all of our family, friends, and guests from across our communities: Although words cannot fully express our grief at this time, we want to express our deepest gratitude for your continued support and all the love and kindness you have shown us over the years.”
Since its founding, Porto’s has become widely known for its signature sweet and savory pastries and cakes with several locations across Southern California.
Remember a life and a legacy
Customers lined up at the Porto Hotel in Glendale as many reflected on the life and legacy of Raul Sr.
“I met him here about four years ago,” Chris Early said. “A very kind, loving man. He’ll certainly be missed, but…he left a legacy. I don’t know how many other stores they have now. This is a staple in Glendale. People know about it. We’ll keep coming here until we can’t get to the drive-thru.”
Since 1960, Porto has been part of the fabric of Los Angeles. Rosa loved baking and began selling cakes out of her home to support her family after she and Raul Sr. came to Los Angeles from Cuba.
Raul Sr. focused on growing his business and soon after, Porto opened his first location in Echo Park in 1976.
The bakery currently has locations in Glendale, Burbank, Downey, Buena Park, West Covina and Northridge. A seventh location will open soon at Downtown Disney at Disneyland.
“We have family members who actually come from Guatemala, or from Ecuador, and they come here specifically to come and eat. So, even the United States or California just doesn’t know about this place,” said Jessica Guerrero of Glendale. “It’s international.”
