Samsung and Google have released a substantial software update for the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, adding enterprise-grade management tools, broader immersive media support, and a range of usability enhancements as the companies continue to build out the Android XR platform.

The update positions Galaxy XR more competitively in the growing mixed-reality market, particularly as businesses and consumers increasingly look for alternatives to premium headsets from Apple and Meta.

Android XR Gains Enterprise Management and Security Features

One of the most significant additions is support for Android Enterprise, Google’s device management platform for workplace-focused Android hardware.

The integration brings enterprise-level security, app deployment, and remote management tools to Galaxy XR, enabling organizations to deploy the headset at scale across corporate environments.

    New Deployment and Compliance Tools

According to Samsung, enterprise customers can now use multiple enrollment methods, including:

    • Zero-touch deployment
    • QR code setup
    • DPC provisioning

The update also introduces expanded enterprise app management, stronger device controls, and hardware-backed security protections designed to help businesses protect sensitive information and meet compliance standards.

The new capabilities could make Galaxy XR more appealing for enterprise use cases such as workforce training, industrial design, remote collaboration, and simulation.

    Usability Improvements Target Everyday Users

Beyond enterprise support, the software update includes several enhancements aimed at improving the headset’s general user experience.

    Interface and Productivity Upgrades

    New usability features include:

    • Customizable virtual keyboard positioning
    • Desktop session restore for up to three apps after reboot
    • Improved spatial alignment for on-screen content

These additions are intended to make multitasking and workspace management more seamless inside the headset.

    Expanded Accessibility Options

Samsung and Google have also added accessibility improvements, including single-eye tracking, which may help users with limited vision or mobility interact more effectively with the device.

Chrome and YouTube Now Support Automatic 3D Conversion

The latest Android XR update expands Google’s auto spatialization technology to Chrome and YouTube, allowing standard 2D media to be automatically converted into immersive 3D experiences.

Previously, the feature was limited to Google Photos, where users could view photos in a more spatial format.

The broader rollout means users can now experience a wider variety of web and video content in 3D-like immersive environments without requiring content creators to produce native spatial media.

Samsung Promises Five Years of Software Support

As part of the update, Samsung and Google said Android XR devices will receive regular software and security updates for up to five years.

That extended support window aligns Galaxy XR more closely with expectations for premium consumer electronics and enterprise hardware, where long-term software maintenance is increasingly considered essential.

Galaxy XR Seeks Middle Ground in Premium Headset Market

Samsung launched Galaxy XR in October 2025 at a retail price of $1,800, placing it between two major competitors in the U.S. XR market:

    • Meta Quest 3 at $500
    • Apple Vision Pro at $3,500

The headset is designed to offer more premium features than Meta’s mainstream consumer headset while remaining significantly less expensive than Apple’s flagship mixed-reality device.

Like Apple Vision Pro, Galaxy XR can draw from a broad existing app ecosystem—leveraging Android applications alongside software built specifically for Android XR.

Android XR Ecosystem Continues to Evolve

Galaxy XR remains the first full-featured headset built on Google’s Android XR platform, and the software ecosystem is still developing as Google works to attract more developers and hardware partners.

The latest update highlights how Samsung and Google are rapidly expanding the platform’s capabilities, with a focus on both enterprise adoption and consumer-facing experiences.

As competition intensifies in the extended reality market, continued software improvements may be critical in determining whether Android XR can establish itself as a credible long-term rival to Apple’s visionOS and Meta’s Horizon OS.
