Tesla has confirmed a new date for the unveiling of its upcoming Robotaxi, a dedicated self-driving vehicle.
The conference is now scheduled for October 10, and CEO Elon Musk is hinting at the possibility of “something else” being held at the event.
Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Tesla had pushed back the unveiling of the Robotaxi, which was scheduled for August 8, to October. The report claimed that the delay was to give Tesla more time to build more prototypes.
Last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the unveiling of the new product had been delayed, without confirming the new timeline.
The CEO added that he requested a “significant change to the front design”:
You’ve requested what I think is a significant change to the front design, and the extra time allows us to show off a few other things.
With the release of Q2 2024 earnings, Musk confirmed that the new date is now October 10.
The CEO confirmed that the delay was due to some changes he had requested, without clarifying what those changes were.
However, Musk said the delay would also allow Tesla to “show off some other things.”
For the past few years, Tesla has been working on a vehicle designed from the ground up to be self-driving. The company has been calling it a “robotaxi.”
Musk insists that Tesla remains committed to delivering the self-driving capability it has promised for existing vehicles delivered since 2016 through a software update, but has also decided to build a new vehicle designed entirely around the fact that it will be driverless.
Not much is known about the car other than hints that it won’t have a steering wheel or pedals, and that it will be “Cybertruck-like” in design. We may also have seen a glimpse of the interior in a video released by Tesla.
