The Acolyte Season 2? Good and Bad News

The Acolyte wrapped its first season on Tuesday, closing out the Osha/Sol storyline but leaving many plot threads open, including some that are of great significance to the larger Star Wars universe. But will Disney renew The Acolyte for a second season? There’s good news and bad news on that front based on what we know, and I’ll be exploring both sides as Disney works to make its decision.

Bad news

budget – The estimated cost of this show is $180 million. That’s easily the cost of a blockbuster, though Disney clearly isn’t getting any ticket sales here. Recently, Disney seems to have realized that it’s overspending and overproducing Star Wars and Marvel content, and is reportedly cutting back on production. Does that include not bringing The Acolyte back for a second season if it costs that much? Well, there’s another factor here:

Number of viewers – Disney doesn’t release exact numbers for its shows, but they tend to brag when they’re high. However, we do have a number of third-party analytics firms estimating that The Acolyte is probably the least-watched Star Wars show Disney has produced, even after Andor, which was the least-watched before this. YouTubers and Twitter users might claim that it’s “because the show sucks,” but critics and most of the newly formed fan base would disagree.

The obvious main reason for it being less than the rest is that, like Andor, it doesn’t feature any major Star Wars characters at all (except for a brief appearance at the end) which is different from the other larger series. At least The Mandalorian was a Boba Fett-type parallel at the beginning, and had Baby Yoda, Grogu. Even The Acolyte isn’t in the same league. a century As with all other Star Wars content. Even Andor has characters from Rogue One and will lead directly into that movie. It’s always been hard to convince people to see a whole new crew in a whole new era.

Good news

The Supreme Republic – Disney seems to have realized that there’s not much left to be made of the Skywalker era. They’re making a new movie that looks to the future with Daisy Ridley as Rey, but this is after the deaths of Luke and Han, and the real-life death of Carrie Fisher.

Back in the day, Disney designed The High Republic as a series of novels, and this time period is supposed to be introduced in The Acolyte here as its first live-action adaptation. It wouldn’t be great if they canceled this show after a few exciting episodes after one season, thus potentially killing the idea of ​​further exploring this era that they were so invested in.

Dave Feloni – Filoni is more or less in charge of directing Star Wars now, and despite some complaints about producer Leslye Headland’s story, the fact remains that Filoni has probably basically agreed to all of this and is therefore in line with his vision of what Star Wars should be now. And if he has his backing, season 2 may also have his backing.

head plan – Headland isn’t blind here, as she’s said in multiple interviews that she has detailed plans for a second season. And now we know that includes popular characters like Darth Plagueis and Yoda, who will appear in season 2. Her real-life wife, Rebecca Henderson, who plays Fernstra, apparently hinted on Instagram that her character’s arc will indeed continue, though that obviously shouldn’t be considered an official renewal.

It boils down to whether Disney is willing to continue investing in an expensive show that not many people have seen in order to continue developing High Republic and wrap up some of the interesting stories that the first season created. I really don’t know what they’re going to do.
