The Vikings announced the first wave of 14-player roster cuts ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s deadline to determine a preliminary 53-player roster for the 2024 season. So far, the team has trimmed its roster from 91 players to 77.
The team announced the exclusion of the following players:
* Midfielder Matt Corral
* RB Dewayne McBride
*TE Samis Reyes
* RB Mo Ibrahim
*CB Jaylen Williams
*TE Neil Johnson
* WR Justin Hall
*OLB Owen Porter
*OL Chuck Villega
*OL Doug Nester
* OL Matt Cindric
* OL Spencer Rowland
*DL Tyler Manoa
Additionally, linebacker AJ Green III was released. As a veteran, he is not subject to the waiver process like younger players.
None of these moves come as a surprise. All of these players were classified as unlucky players in my team list last week.
Nearly half of those players — Corral, Ibrahim, Johnson, Hall, Villega and Cindric — were signed in the last two weeks. They were needed as starters for the final preseason game, but it was always unlikely that they would make the 53-man roster. Jaren Hall has decisively outpaced Corral as the Vikings’ third-string quarterback, which was expected.
Green is the only name here with some real NFL experience, though Williams also saw the field for the Vikings last season. Porter, Nester, Cindric, Roland and Manuwa were all part of the Vikings’ undrafted rookie class this year. Reyes, a tight end from Chile, was on the roster as part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. He saw regular-season action for Washington in 2021.
