Washington | A man killed himself by driving through a barricade near the U.S. Congressional building in Washington early Sunday morning and fatally shooting himself multiple times in the air, Capitol Police said.
“Just after 4:00 a.m., a man drove his car into a barricade located at East Capitol Street and Second Street,” behind the U.S. Supreme Court and a stone’s throw from the Capitol, according to a police report. Capital on Sunday morning.
The car burst into flames before starting to shoot into the air. Police rushed to the man after hearing gunshots, but he shot himself.
No one was injured, according to the report.
The background of the person, who has not been identified, will be investigated.
Capitol Police said it did not appear to target members of Congress who are currently on leave.
The building is heavily guarded against an attack by Donald Trump’s supporters protesting the results of the presidential election on January 6, 2021. This has been especially true since the Supreme Court struck down the constitutional right to abortion.
