Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are starring in a new TV series together, called A brother from another mother. Turns out the title hits pretty close to home.
McConaughey stopped by Kelly Ripa’s podcast, “Let’s Talk Off Camera” and shared a wild story. While he and Harrelson have been close friends for decades, their relationship may actually run a little deeper.
McConaughey told RIBA about his relationship with Harrelson: according to diverse. “And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are of me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are of me.”
It turns out they might be right.
“In Greece a few years ago, we would sit down and talk about how close we were to our families,” McConaughey said on the podcast. And my mom’s there, and she’s like, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone knew about the ovals my mom left after I learned. It was a load of knowledge.”
After his mother Kay dropped that bombshell, McConaughey did some digging into his family history.
“We did some math and figured it out [Harrelson’s] My dad was on vacation at the same time that Mom and Dad were in their second divorce,” McConaughey said. “Then there are potential receipts and places in West Texas where there might be a gathering, meeting, or ‘well-known’ moment.”
Yes, this famous bromance may actually be among his bros.
For his part, McConaughey isn’t quite ready to take a DNA test and prove a possible family connection.
“Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do it. ‘” [DNA tests], “Because what skin is in it?” McConaughey said. “It’s a little bit harder for me because he’s asking me to take the opportunity to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad might not be my dad after 53 years to believe it?'” “I got more skin in the game.”
Of course if they were siblings, not much would change in their relationship. After all, according to McConaughey, “My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew.”
Either way, it’s all good fodder for what’s to come Texas– TV Series. The upcoming Apple TV+ series is described as a “quirky, heartfelt couple’s love story” about the “weird and beautiful bond” between McConaughey and Harrelson.
