Oakland A’s TV announcer Glenn Kuiper apologized during Friday’s game against the Kansas City Royals after he made a racial accusation on air.
Before the game, Kuiper, along with color commentator Dallas Braden, said, “We had a great day today. (n word) League Museum. And an Arthur Bryant roast.”
On the broadcast, Kuiper apologized for his remarks during the sixth inning.
“Earlier in the show, I said something, it didn’t turn out quite the way I wanted it to,” Kuiper said. “I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I intended. I just wanted to apologize for that.”
The 59-year-old Kuiper is the primary play-by-play announcer for the A’s on NBC Sports California. He is in his seventeenth season in the role.
Kuiper isn’t the first baseball announcer to make an insensitive remark on air. Jim Kaat issued an on-air apology during an Astros-White Sox playoff game in 2021 when he suggested that teams would like to have a “40-acre stadium full” of players like Chicago’s Yon Moncada. Katt also apologized to New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Curtis after he called him a “Nestor molester” during the Twins broadcast on June 2, 2022.
Jack Morris has been suspended indefinitely from broadcast television in Detroit after making an offensive tone when he spoke about Angels star Shohei Ohtani on August 17, 2021. From a doubleheader on August 19, 2020.
