Netflix has a mixed track record when it comes to adapting beloved Japanese animated series into live-action formats. Like 2021 Cowboy Bebop More than most die-hard fans – just for the perfect on-court acting alone, despite the fact that the fight choreography left a lot to be desired. It was definitely better than Live versions to Fullmetal Alchemist (Another of my character anime favourites), but Netflix chose not to renew Cowboy Bebop. So we’ll never know if he’ll work out his issues, though the appearance of the cameo eventually made for a particularly disgusting version of Radical Ed didn’t bode well.
Given this checkered history, one could be forgiven for feelings of apprehension about the upcoming live-action series adaptation for the streaming platform one piece, the hugely popular manga and anime series created by Eiichiro Oda. Who doesn’t love pirates? The first trailer debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, and honestly, the live-action series looks pretty cool. Then again, so did the trailers Cowboy Bebop.
the original one piece The manga debuted in 1997, following the adventures of one of the monkeys Luffy, who heads a motley crew called the Straw Hat Pirates. There is the swordsman Roronoa Zoro, the thief and navigator Nami, the sniper and compulsive liar Usopp, and a cook named Sanji. They are searching for the legendary One Piece, a legendary treasure that will make anyone who possesses it King of the Pirates. Monkey wants to be king of the pirates, but so do a bunch of other pirates with their ships and crews.

Judging by this trailer, Netflix is sticking very closely to the original concept, as the first season follows Monkey as he recruits the early members of the Straw Hat Pirates. According to the official introduction:
Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has been yearning for a life of freedom since he can remember. Luffy sets out from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary treasure, One Piece, and become the King of the Pirates! But in order to find the ultimate prize, Luffy will need to assemble the crew he always wanted before finding a ship to sail, search every inch of the vast blue seas, outwit the marines, and outsmart dangerous rivals at every turn.
Inaki Godoy plays the monkey, who has rubber-like abilities thanks to accidentally eating a Devil Fruit. Makinho plays Zoro, Emily Rudd plays Nami, Taz Skyler plays Sanji, and Jacob Romero Gibson plays Usopp, the son of the notorious pirate father Yasopp. Peter Gadiot plays Shanks, Captain of the Red Hair Pirates. Elia Isorelis Paulino plays the ruthless captain of the Alvida Pirates. and Jeff Ward as Boogie, the clown-wearing Captain of the Buggy Pirates who also accidentally ate a Devil Fruit. In his case, it gave him the ability to split his body into parts. (It’s a highlight of the trailer.) Plus, Langley Kirkwood plays Captain Morgan and Aidan Scott plays his son, Helmeppo.
