- Google has confirmed the existence of the Pixel 8a.
- The phone will carry the new battery information stats that were previously spotted on existing Pixel phones but were later removed after a feature drop in March.
Google inadvertently confirmed the existence of the Pixel 8a while addressing a Pixel feature that mysteriously disappeared after the March Pixel feature drop.
With the Android 14 QPR 1 update, Google has introduced new battery statistics in the Battery Information section, which shows the number of charging cycles and the battery manufacturing date. These details were intended to help users estimate their phone's battery health. However, the information was randomly removed from Pixels after the last update in March.
Addressing the issue in its issue tracker, Google says this behavior is intentional and that the now missing battery stats were never supposed to appear on existing devices.
With that said, the company also confirmed that the new battery stats information is supposed to be displayed on all Pixel 8a and later devices.
“We only enable this page on Pixel 8a and later, so this is WAI (Work as Intended)” Google books On the issue tracking page.
This shows that cycle counts and battery manufacturing information will come to the Pixel 8a and all future Pixel phones. It is still unclear whether the feature will also arrive on newer Google phones such as the Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 series.
Google is expected to launch the Pixel 8a in the coming months. It may be unveiled at Google I/O in May.
