After OpenAI wowed us with its GPT-4o model, Google followed up with a Gemini chat demo that made the future of AI look bright, too.
Google has released a new video showing off a Gemini prototype on the Pixel using live video and spoken prompts to deliver information. The video appears to have been filmed during the build-up to Google I/O, which starts on May 14.

In the demo, they show a Gemini AI-powered Pixel phone to the stage set up for Google I/O and ask what they think is going on. Correctly, she says it looks like the scene of a big event being prepared. When the messages appear on the screen, Gemini says they are for Google I/O and gives a brief description of the upcoming Google event.
Much like OpenAI’s recent ChatGPT demo, Google’s Gemini video is impressive given how natural the conversation is. It’s easy to forget that there’s no person behind the sound coming from your Pixel. He moves naturally as if two friends were sitting and talking.
Without testing two AI models, it’s hard to say which one works better, but both are impressive. You should be excited (and maybe a little nervous) about the future of AI based on these two demos. And according to OpenAI, it’s only going to get a lot better from here.
Although Google’s demo is exciting, the company has been criticized in the past for making its AI demo look more impressive than it actually was. We’ll have to play around with these Gemini changes before we know for sure how much they’ve improved, but if the video is an accurate representation, the AI battle has only just begun.
Google’s keynote is scheduled to kick off Google I/O, so we’ll learn more about plans for Gemini and plenty of other projects from the company soon.
