Three 18-year-olds who had nothing to do but throw large rocks at cars on the evening of April 19 will now face murder charges after one of the victims died.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado said Wednesday it has closed its investigation into a series of alleged wrongdoings that ended in the death of 20-year-old Alexa Bartell, which produced the arrested suspects.
According to the police, the three accused were enjoying themselves by throwing large landscape stones on the moving cars on the evening of April 19. For about twenty minutes, they hit at least five vehicles, causing various damages to the first four, mainly to windows or bodywork. The motorist sustained minor injuries when a stone broke the windshield.
Things go wrong when Alexa Bartel hits the road behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Spark, unaware of the danger that awaits her. A stone thrown by one of the suspects went through his windshield, killing him.
“Moments before her death, Alexa was on the phone with a friend when the line went dead. Alexa’s friend found her phone and drove to the designated location on Indiana Street. She found Alexa in a field on the side of the road injured in her car,” the sheriff’s office said.
The three suspects, Joseph Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Carroll-Sick and Zachary Kwok, are all 18 years old. They face charges of first degree murder and gross negligence. Officials have warned that other charges could also be added.
