Coe Gibbs, Vice Chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing, has passed away at the age of 49

At about 3 p.m. ET, JGR released the following statement:

Coe’s father, JGR owner, Joe Gibbs, and son, Ty, both returned to North Carolina ahead of the start of the NASCAR Cup Series Championship race on Sunday.

Christopher Bella JGR Cup driver, is one of four vying for the series title in Sunday’s race.

On Saturday night, Coy was at Phoenix Raceway as his 20-year-old son Ty, driving the family team, won his seventh race of the year and took home his first NASCAR Championship.

“I’ve had this before in multiple sports. So it was just watching him and seeing how he would react during the day,” Coe said after the race. I think he doubled down and did his job after making a terrible mistake last week.

“It was fun watching that.”

Coy, the son of NASCAR and NFL Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs, is a former NASCAR driver and assistant coach with the Washington captains in the NFL.

Gibbs was a quarterback at Stanford University from 1991 to 1994. Gibbs made his NASCAR debut in the 2000 Truck Series, taking part in driving assignments for the #18 Chevrolet with his brother, J.D., who died in 2019 from Complications after a long battle. He has a neurodegenerative disease, also at the age of 49.

In 2001, Coyi began racing full-time in the Truck Series, scoring two of the top five, and then finishing 10th in the series standings the following year. In 2003, he replaced Mike McLaughlin in what is now the Xfinity Series, with two top-10 finishes.

In 2004, after Joe Gibbs was reappointed as coach for Washington, he joined the team as offensive assistant QC, serving in that capacity until 2007.

Coy Gibbs founded the JGRMX team in 2008 and in 2016 was appointed to his current position as Vice Chairman and Director of Operations, overseeing the organization’s NASCAR programs.

Coy and his wife Heather have four children – Ty, Case, Jett and Ellie.
