A suspected burglar in an apartment in Rome, Italy, was caught reading a book on Greek mythology in the middle of the act on August 20.
Daniel Ligori, 38, allegedly entered an apartment in the Italian capital through a balcony but was distracted by a book.The Iliad Homer’s was placed on the bedside table, Italian media reported Republic.
The 71-year-old owner later woke up and confronted the thief-reader. He is said to have tried unsuccessfully to escape the way he came since his last arrest.
The suspect later told police he climbed the building to see an acquaintance. Officers found the stolen cloth bag on him.
According to the suspect, these clothes are to be given to the homeless. He later changed his version of events.
“I had to meet someone who lives in this building, and while waiting, I used the condominium terrace to enjoy the view. Unfortunately, I slipped on the first floor porch. For a moment I thought I found myself in a “bed & breakfast,” where I “I saw a book. I was impressed. However, I wanted to point out that I didn’t steal anything.”
He was acquitted due to “insignificance of fact”.
After seeing the news in the newspaper, the author of the book Gli dei alle sei – Iliad allora del aperitivo (Gods at Six – The Iliad at Aperitif Time), Giovanni Nucci said he wanted to send the thief a copy so he could finish reading it.
“Humans are unpredictable, so they can break into a house to steal and be captured by a book,” the author said in an interview with Italian media.
