DETROIT — It looks like Jazz Chisholm Jr. will avoid the knife, at least for now.
After the Yankees sought multiple opinions from doctors on the new third baseman’s lower collateral ligament injury, rest and rehabilitation were recommended for Chisholm rather than surgery, The Washington Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed Friday.
The club hopes Chisholm will be able to play again this season, most likely in September.
Chisolm was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left elbow sprain (non-throwing) suffered while diving into home plate Monday night against the White Sox.
He underwent an MRI on Tuesday, but the Yankees were waiting to hear back from doctors before finalizing their latest trade deadline award plan.
“I can tell you the Jazz are encouraged by how they’re feeling,” coach Aaron Boone said Wednesday. “So hopefully that’s a good sign.”
As of Wednesday, Chisholm has been suspended from baseball activities and Boone is unsure when he will be able to play again.
The left-handed hitter — who will be under team control through 2026 — provided an immediate spark for the Yankees upon his acquisition from the Marlins, crushing seven home runs in 14 games while batting .316 with a 1.062 OPS.
While Chisolm is out, the Yankees plan to replace him at third base with a combination of Oswaldo Cabrera, DJ Lemayo and Oswald Peraza.
