“General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor died while protecting his co-worker from armed robbers who shot him only for a catalytic converter.
Wactor, 37, was walking her unidentified friend to her own car when he came across the three thieves who had taken his car at about 3:25 a.m. on Saturday. His brother Grant told the Daily Mail.
“We are Southerners, born and raised, and we would never allow a female to go to their car alone,” said the grieving brother.
“He ran into them and thought his truck was being towed. So he said something to the guys, like, ‘Hey, are you towing?’
“Then as soon as he turned around, he saw what was happening and put his co-worker behind him. That’s when they shot him.”
The actor was retreating and trying to protect his co-worker when the men opened fire, Grant said, citing a Los Angeles Police Department assessment of the scene.
The robbers — who police say were all wearing masks — fled the scene in a separate car. They had not been identified as of Monday morning.
“We are completely devastated,” Wactor’s grandmother, Barbara, told the Daily Mail. “He was walking to his car. It doesn’t make any sense.”
The actor’s mother, Scarlett Wactor, is there, too He told NBC News How her son came forward in front of her co-worker to protect her, describing him as “a light in a dark room.”
“There is a huge hole in all of us that cannot be repaired,” she said.
Johnny often took extra shifts as a bartender between acting gigs, and he worked later than usual that night, his mother said. He left with three co-workers, two of whom headed in separate directions before he encountered Wactor and the woman he was walking with.
