On Tuesday, Kelly Clarkon shared her powerful, stripped-down cover of Katy Perry's “Wide Awake.” Accompanied by her show's musical director Jason Halpert, the singer slowed down her Kylieuke cover song and performed the song acoustically, allowing her impressive vocal range to take center stage. Her rendition quickly gained love on social media, and eventually caught the attention of Perry herself, who couldn't help but chime in with the praise.

The comment received more than 6,000 likes, with many fans chiming in to reassure Perry that they would love to keep hearing her sing the song live.


“This is my favorite song of yours and I feel it every second when [listen] “To your copy,” one commenter wrote. “I love Kelly and the cover was great but I could never change your copy.”

Clarkson's cover comes nearly 12 years after Perry first released the song as part of Teenage dream: full dessert. It was written specifically for the 2012 concert film Katy Perry – Part of MeWith both the song and Accompanying music video Inspired by the big changes in her life, including her divorce from Russell Brand.


“It's been like a maze of my life the last couple of years,” Perry told MTV at the time. “I just wanted to tell a story about myself going through this journey, and maybe sometimes trying to get out of the maze. There are good parts, there are bad parts, and all the time there's a younger version of me leading me through it.”


The track peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.



Clarkson regularly covers songs as part of her daytime talk show, a popular perception that often sees the “stronger” singer go viral for reinventing a song by other artists. Clarkson attracted online attention last year for her performance of The Eagles' “Desperado,” and before that Her version of Billie Eilish's song “Happier Than Ever”.
