Lebanon: Israeli strikes kill three, Hezbollah bombards northern Israel

Hezbollah announced overnight Sunday that it had fired rockets into northern Israel after Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon killed three of its fighters and wounded 12 others.

A source close to Hezbollah told AFP that two militants were killed in a drone strike on Sunday in the Israeli border town of Taybeh.

The third fatality, identified by the movement as a Hezbollah fighter, was attacked in the southern city of Beit Lif “several days ago” and died of his injuries on Sunday, Lebanon’s health ministry said.

Yet according to the ministry, at least one Lebanese and eleven Syrians were injured, including two seriously – an infant and a child – in an Israeli strike that “targeted” Maroub near Tertqayya.

The pro-Iranian movement has fired on the Israeli military almost daily since the war in Gaza began in October.

The violence was exacerbated by the July 30 assassination of the head of the Lebanese Armed Forces, which is claimed by Israel.

It was the first such strike in Saida after Hezbollah opened a front against Israel in favor of Hamas.

Ten months of violence have killed at least 565 people in Lebanon, most of them Hezbollah fighters but at least 116 civilians, according to an AFP tally.

They forced about 100,000 people from their homes on both sides of the border.

Officials say 22 soldiers and 26 civilians were killed in Israel and the occupied Golan Heights.
