The Ruby Princess, which recently arrived in Galveston, Texas, reported 284 passengers and 34 crew members sick. There were 2,881 people on board, including 1,159 crew. The boat came from the Caribbean and Mexico.
Patients had symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, no cause has been identified.
In a statement, Princess Cruises, of whom Ruby Princess is part, believes the possible cause is norovirus, an infectious virus that causes severe gastroenteritis.
According to the company, continuous cleaning measures have been taken in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus. The ship was decontaminated in Galveston before departing on another voyage the week of March 5.
New passengers were also informed about reports of sick people.
More norovirus cases are being reported in the US, showing an earlier surge compared to the previous season. Cases usually occur between November and April.
