A Texas airport employee died Friday after being “swallowed” by the engine of a plane that landed on the tarmac, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) learned Sunday.
The man was sucked into the engine of a Delta flight that landed at San Antonio International Airport from Los Angeles, California. .
The NTSB has opened an investigation to determine the consequences of the crash, which happened around 10:25 p.m. (local time) on Friday.
According to local media, the man worked for Unify Aviation, a company that provides support services to several airlines, including Delta.
Delta Air Lines said it was deeply saddened by the crash and pledged to “cooperate with authorities” leading the investigation in a press release sent to local station KENS 5.
On Wednesday, airline company Piedmont Airlines was fined $15,000 by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for its responsibility in a fatal airport accident last year under similar circumstances.
