The 16-pin NVIDIA connector on the GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card burns and melts the cable and socket

The first case of a 16-pin NVIDIA connector, powering the GeForce RTX 4090, burning and melting the plug was reported on Reddit.

Another 4090 (ASUS 4090 TUF OC) with a damaged 12VHPWR power connector was posted in the same reddit thread as the original Gigabyte card post from today.

redditor, St. Reggie_Jackel, posted on the NVIDIA subreddit, an image of a 16-pin NVIDIA connector has been burned. The connector was powering the new GeForce RTX 4090 (custom model). The pictures show that both the 16-pin to 4 x 8-pin power adapter and the power connector on the PCB ended up in flames and melted. The graphics card was a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming OC.

Looking closely at the pictures, it appears that the problem occurred around the twelve main pins under the additional four pins at the top. But looking at the transformer, it completely burned out and melted. The cable is supplied and confirms the official NVIDIA specifications and we already mentioned that bending or putting too much stress on the cable can lead to abnormal temperatures which can eventually lead to issues like this.

The user reported that he was playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on his NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 PC when the card caught fire and the power connector burned. It also states that it may be a defective cable and will RMA although we won’t be able to get to the bottom of this issue until we have more information.

It was recently noticed that the 16-pin NVIDIA adapter cable for GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards is quite thick and not easy to manage in smaller computer cases because it hits the side panel a lot. So users will have to bend the cable a lot to close the panel but again, this bending is not recommended as it could heat up the cables and cause the transformer to catch fire.

But this is just one report and the problem does not appear to be widespread otherwise we would have heard multiple reports. But users only had a maximum of two weeks with the cards and most people are still waiting to get their shipments. So if the adapter or plug in the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards is really defective, we’ll know for sure in the coming months.
