If you’re still using a Mac with an Intel processor, you’ll have at least another year of macOS support. Apple says macOS Sequoia runs on the same Macs as macOS Sonoma, but as usual, there are some caveats about specific features supported on Intel hardware.

    Apple intelligence

As we’ve covered several times already, all of the Apple Intelligence features Apple has announced are only available on Macs running Apple Silicon. Specifically, Apple says Apple Intelligence requires an M1 chip or later. This means Intel users won’t be able to take advantage of Apple’s first big leap into generative AI features.

    Live transcription

Apple says macOS Sequoia’s support for live audio transcription in Apple Notes is also limited to Apple Silicon devices.

    • Live transcription: Record audio sessions inside your note and create live audio transcripts that you can search or combine with comments, checklists, or other documents.
      • Available on Mac computers with Apple silicon in English (Australia), English (Canada), English (Ireland), English (New Zealand), English (South Africa), English (UK), and English (US).

    That’s it!

This may indicate that there are no non-Apple Intelligence features in macOS Sequoia, but the rest of the update is available in all its glory for both Intel and Apple Silicon platforms.

I was particularly surprised (and pleased) to see the groundbreaking iPhone Mirroring feature available on Intel as well as Apple Silicon. This feature allows you to view what’s on your iPhone on your Mac, and control it using the keyboard and trackpad.

Here are Apple’s compatibility details for iPhone clones in macOS Sequoia:

    • Available on Mac computers with Apple silicon and Intel-based Mac computers with the T2 Security Chip. Requires that your iPhone and Mac are signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication, that your iPhone and Mac are near each other, that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on, and that your Mac isn’t using AirPlay or Sidecar.

What macOS Sequoia feature are you most excited to try? Let us know in the comments.
