Xbox Live Down – Latest Updates on Major Outage

A reader reached out to me and told me that he was able to connect to Xbox Live and play the game.

We’ve seen reports from people who say they’re able to get in and play the game. It’s unclear which regions are restoring server access. One Reddit user who posted on the Xbox forum appears to be from Ohio.

Another person from Dubai claimed that they were able to access Twitter (or X).

If so, it will come back slowly and on a case-by-case basis.

We’re seeing conflicting reports from all over the web saying that some people are able to sign in but can’t do anything on Xbox Live, while others claim the service is still down.

The company has not confirmed anything on any of its platforms yet.

Otherwise, the internet is full of people demanding that Xbox give them free Xbox Live or some other compensation since the service has been down for so long. At this point, that’s probably the case.

We believe this outage was caused by a DDoS attack.

Someone claiming to be an Xbox representative on Down Detector said the following, “Xbox Actor This outage is causing our technical team a difficult time. We expect to resolve the issue within approximately 3 hours. We apologize for the wait and thank you for your patience on our team.”

I think this is a scam, but if true, and with the ongoing outage, it means we won’t see service back up again until 6pm PT.

It’s now 3pm PT, and Xbox Live is still down.

The Xbox Live status page has been updated with a brief note saying, “It’s taking longer than expected.”

Xbox Support Profile X provided a brief update. Things are still down and the investigation continues.

The PlayStation Network was supposedly down for about two hours yesterday, but Sony quickly restored it. It’s unclear if this is related to today’s Xbox Live outage.

This issue highlights the problem of modern gaming that requires many services to be always connected to the Internet.

We’ve seen a lot of posts from players who want to play games like Skyrim and Minecraft (assuming they’re not on the servers) or even sports titles like EA’s FC2024 or 2K’s NBA2K24 that can’t be accessed due to connection issues.

However, as mentioned earlier, there is a workaround to the network setup where you can log in as offline. This should work for some games and apps.

As of 2:30 p.m. PT, Xbox Live is still down. It’s been three and a half hours since the service first went down.

The outage is still ongoing and no updates have been released by Microsoft or Xbox.

On X, between Xbox Series X, Xbox, and Xbox Live, the social media site has seen nearly 50,000 posts in the last hour or so.

Looking online, it appears that the service is still down.

However, one Reddit user reminded us that about a decade ago, there was a group of hackers calling themselves Lizard Squad who used DDoS attacks to disrupt Xbox Live and a number of other services during 2014.

I doubt this is caused by the same group, whether it’s a DDoS attack or otherwise.

However, it seems that the moderators are deleting most of the posts related to the outage, probably to not disrupt the feeds but still.

It is unclear whether the outage affects everyone.

Take this with a grain of salt, but we’ve seen users on X claim to be playing on Xbox. One user claimed to be playing Destiny and using Discord on Xbox. These could be trolls.

I live on the West Coast of the US, and this will mostly only affect kids on summer vacation, but on the East Coast, people are starting to miss work and I imagine they want a short break to play games.

It’s now 2pm PT and Xbox Live appears to still be down. According to Xbox Live, Status pageTheir first outage was reported at 11:07 a.m. PT.

The company has listed the issue as a major problem. “You may not be able to sign in to your Xbox profile, you may experience disconnection while signing in, or you may experience other related issues. Features that require sign-in, such as most games, apps, and social activities, will not be available.”

A brief update at 1:53 p.m. claimed they had found a related issue, but did not elaborate on what the issue might be.

The Xbox Support page on Twitter and other platforms has not posted any updates since the last update at 1:15 p.m.

While total reports to Down Detector peaked at around 38,000 by 12 p.m. PT, the service has seen over 10,000 reports so far.

As of 1:40 PM PT, Xbox Live is still down with no new updates from Xbox. This issue appears to be global.

A French Xbox blog confirmed that the outage is affecting Xbox on PC, consoles, and mobile devices.
