Brandon Aiyuk isn’t the only notable player to miss 49ers practice, as star cornerback Trent Williams also didn’t take the field during training camp.
The All-Pro offensive lineman is likely to want to restructure his contract; he has three years remaining, but is set to make significantly more money in 2026 than in 2024.
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch discussed Williams’ situation on Friday. “Murph & Marcus” is produced by KNBR.
“Trent has been away from us, but the communication has been good there,” Lynch told Brian Murphy and Marcus Boucher. “Hopefully we can work things out and get Trent back here. We’re working hard on that. I know he wants to [get back here] “I know we want that.”
Lynch did not set a timeline for Williams’ expected return.
Williams, 36, appears to be looking for long-term security in San Francisco, and the future NFL Hall of Fame candidate knows time is running out in his 13-year NFL career.
Williams has three years and $77.25 million remaining. His current contractHowever, the 11-time Pro Bowl selection is set to make $20.9 million for the 2024 NFL season, $23.3 million in 2025, and then rise to $33 million in 2026.
San Francisco needs its superstar offensive lineman to compete for a Super Bowl, and Williams is being fined $50,000 for every practice he misses.
Meanwhile, Ayuk shows up at training and watches the team’s activities, albeit from a distance.
But, of course, he is also waiting for a new contract.
The 49ers have had a tough offseason when it comes to contracts. The team’s stars are looking for safety while San Francisco is missing workouts that help build chemistry.
