British Open second round standings, results: Shane Lowry leads after second round with 69 with expected cut line at around +5

After 18 holes of the final major championship of the year, we have a surprise at the top of the Scottish golf championship standings.

Daniel Brown, who entered the week ranked 273rd in the Official World Golf Ranking, took the lead in the tournament after shooting a flawless 65 on Thursday at Royal Troon. Brown, who edged Shane Lowry with a late birdie to take the lead by one stroke, is playing in his first major tournament this week. He is also the highest-ranked golfer to lead a major tournament after the opening round since 2016.

Lowry, who shot a flawless 66, is in a great position to make a good start by the middle of the tournament. He won his first major at Royal Portrush in 2019. Justin Thomas will start Friday alone in third place at 3-under, with a group of seven players tied at 2-under.

After their fierce battle in North Carolina, neither Bryson DeChambeau nor Rory McIlroy started their week in Scotland well. DeChambeau opened with a 5-over-par 76, and McIlroy finished with a 7-over-par 78. Both will have to work hard on Friday to qualify, something McIlroy hasn’t missed at the British Open since 2019.

Tiger Woods also struggled again, as he has so many times in recent years. Woods shot a 79-over-par on Thursday, which will likely see him miss out on a seventh major or withdraw from his last 10 appearances.

  • Shane Lowry finished the match with a stunning strike to take his score to -7.

2019 Open champion Shane Lowry shot 69-under to win the second round. He overcame a double-birdie on the 11th hole to take a one-shot lead by the end of the day. He was given a late tee time on Saturday – a day that could see more wind and rain at Royal Troon.

  • Yahoo Sports’ Jay Busby gives his take on the 2024 Tiger British Open

With Tiger Woods’ 2024 Major Championship season winding down, what’s next for the most beloved golfer of the past three decades? Retirement has been a topic of conversation for the 15-time major champion, and with another disappointing showing at one of the sport’s biggest events, Jay Busby reflects on the great’s future, and what might be next for the golf icon.

  • Tiger finishes his Open with +14

The collective consciousness of the golfing world has been etched with 15 major championships and three British Opens, and while the days of competing at the top of the leaderboard are long gone, the opportunity for the greatest player of all time to still be a part of the majors is still there for the golfing world. Tiger Woods will fail to qualify for the seventh time in his last 10 events – the qualifying line is expected to be +5 – after he scored 79-77 to finish the tournament at +14.

  • Scheffler is three goals away from the lead after 14 minutes.

He’s the hottest player in the world, having won six of his last 10 starts, and is now 2-under par at 14 after making one of a handful of birdies on the day at No. 14. That red came at the end of a run of eight straight pars that kept him in contention for the second round at Royal Troon.

  • Lori steadies the ship.

After a tough double-fault on the 11th hole, Lowry remained in the lead after making three straight birdies to stay at 5-under par, tied with Daniel Brown.

  • Tiger shows off his old footage skills

Despite playing one of the toughest major championships of his career, the highlights we’ve seen for nearly three decades still crop up from Tiger Woods, including this stunning putt on the 15th hole.

  • Shane Lowry returns to the pitch

Shane Lowry’s magic came to an end on the 11th hole at Royal Troon on Friday. With a two-stroke lead, Lowry stepped up to the tee on the 11th hole… and hit his shot deep into the dense Scottish rough. He ended up having to take an unplayable error, then hit a putt short of the green. After a double bogey, Lowry fell back to a tie with Daniel Brown on -5. Lowry remains the joint leader in the Open Championship, but with the wind picking up and the toughest part of the course ahead, Lowry will have to work harder to win.

  • John Daly withdraws from the Open Championship

Another former Open champion is announcing his early retirement. John Daly, the 1995 Open champion, withdrew from this year’s tournament after one round, citing a knee injury. Daly and Ernie Els scored +11 points in the opening round of the tournament.

  • Leaderboard Update: Lori Tops Again

Shane Lowry gave the Open Championship another lead after a birdie on the eighth hole. Things are going Lowry’s way now, and with the tough weather ahead, Friday afternoon could be a very interesting one for Lowry.

    1. Shane Lowry, -7 (up 8)
    2. Daniel Brown, -6(3)
    3. Justin Thomas, -3 (7:53 a.m. ET)
    T4. Xander Schoeffel + 7 more, -2

  • Tiger Woods Birdie!

Look, it’s a little sad to get all excited about Tiger Woods getting a single point, but that’s where we are now. Woods hit a long putt on the par-5 sixth hole to end up winning by a single point… +10. Well, that’s about it.

  • Tough day for Scotty Scheffler’s coach

Getting sick on the job is tough, especially when your job involves lugging a heavy bag up and down the hills of Scotland. It seems something is seriously wrong with Scotty Scheffler’s baggage handler, Ted Scott; he’s reportedly lying on the ground while Scheffler isn’t actively hitting a ball. With Scheffler only four holes out by 6:15 a.m. ET, Scott still has a long way to go.

  • Ernie Els withdraws from Open with injury

Royal Troon is taking on the contenders for the 152nd Open Championship, one by one. The latest to withdraw from the tournament was Ernie Els, the Open champion in 2002 and 2012. Els withdrew before the second round, citing a back injury.

On Thursday, the Big Easy player scored +11 points, finishing second to last on the day. Els has three wins this season as a member of the PGA Tour Champions, and is currently still in the field for next week’s Senior British Open.

Els joins Romain Langasqui, who withdrew Thursday after an embarrassing 84-yard shot at the famed Postage Stamp Stadium.

  • Shane Lowry jumps to the top spot immediately.

Just one hole later, Shane Lowry was back in the lead. He just made a birdie on the first hole to tie Daniel Brown at 6 under par.

  • Tiger drops two shots early

Well, Tiger Woods just double-faulted on the second hole, missing the fairway and then the green entirely on his approach. He’s now 10 over par, several shots off the expected cut early on. Not the best start.

  • Weather forecast for Friday

It doesn’t look like we’ll get any rain today at Royal Troon.

  • Tiger Woods starts second round

Tiger Woods and his group now begin the second round at Royal Troon. Woods shot 79 over par on Thursday and will need a huge round today to qualify.

While this is a familiar trend for the golf legend, and there have been increasing calls for him to retire, Woods responded forcefully to those calls earlier this week. Yahoo Sports’ Jay Busby wrote that Woods “probably won’t win another Tour title,” but he should still play “as long as it pleases.”

  • Marcel Siam doing the moves

Marcel Siem made 5 birdies and a foul on the first nine holes of the day. He has now moved up to fourth place after his foul on the ninth hole.
