Canadians are entering 2023 with a certain pessimism, due to fears of an economic recession in the country, according to an Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of Global News.

According to the poll, less than 75% of Canadians admit they are worried about the economy worsening in 2023. In families with children, the proportion even rises to 83%.

However, when asked about their 2022, 64% of respondents agreed that last year was good for them, while 51% of Canadians believe the country is having a good year overall, torn between inflation and the pandemic.

On the other hand, only 31% of respondents believe that this year was better in the world, where the news is dominated by the war in Ukraine.

“In short, compared to the past two years, Canadians view 2022 positively, especially at the personal level. However, this optimism remains cautious when taking into account economic trends,” Ipsos commented in a statement to Global News.

Citizens in the Prairie states are more pessimistic than the rest of the country, the agency also noted.

The poll of 1,004 Canadians aged 18 and over was conducted Dec. 14-16.
