The team announced on Tuesday that Daniel Ricciardo will return to Formula 1 racing in Hungary, replacing Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri. Here’s what you need to know:

Shock return to Ricciardo
When Ricciardo lost his seat at McLaren at the end of last year, he needed some time to reset it. A bruised two years left him questioning his ability, wondering if he had lost the spark that made him an eight-time Grand Prix winner.
Red Bull, the team with which he enjoyed the peak of his Formula 1 success between 2014 and 2018, made a home as a third driver. Although his primary job was to support Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, the role was an opportunity for him to find his feet again.
