On Tuesday we went to select the members of the jury to decide on the treasonous conspiracy of the Oath Keepers, one of the far-right groups present at the time of the January 6, 2021 attacks.

These militias are mostly made up of ex-soldiers and law enforcement officers who claim to defend the constitution. They’ve been involved in everything from Roger Stone to Alex Jones and Infowars, mired in disinformation and conspiracy mud.

    Judiciary plays a big role

In January 2022, the Department of Justice filed charges against 11 members of the militant group. The trial of five of the 11 accused began on Tuesday.

The latter were accused of preparing a treasonous plot and then using force to prevent a peaceful transition of power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison. Two of the 11 accused members will plead guilty and their defense could be compromised.

Justice Department lawyers know that if the people involved play up their freedoms, they are on a slippery slope of being politically charged. Not only do we rarely prove the existence of a treasonous conspiracy, there have been no guilty verdicts since the mid-1990s, leaving no room for error.

    Trump next?

In today’s polarized environment, government failure can have a domino effect. If all the spotlight is on Oath Keepers for now, many viewers won’t fail to notice all the connections between the group and 45.e President. The group members also alleged that they were there to protect the President’s supporters.

One of the fighters’ defense strategies is based on the possibility that 45e The President implements the Sedition Act. This old law from 1807 would have allowed Donald Trump to use the militia’s services. For them, the Oath Keepers were only ever ready to answer a call that never came.

At first glance, the Justice Department appears to have solid evidence, including several text messages between members of the group. Not only can we prove the seriousness of the products, but we have taken action.

In recent years, the extreme right has gained followers, and approaches to power are becoming more frequent. Presentation of facts beyond doubt, one can only hope for impeccable work of judiciary.

The security of democracy knows no respite and what is at stake from yesterday is beyond the fate of a few individuals, it is the stability of an entire system that is in question.
