Atlanta Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ryder surprised coach Arthur Smith with how easily he implemented an attacking scheme.

“Behind the scenes, the things he’s done, as a rookie, are really from the neck up,” Smith said Wednesday. Via the team’s official website. “How it works, when we walk the rookies, when we do these fixtures and on the field, and command it. Then you bet on some physical stuff that you sometimes see to catch up. He’s light years ahead of most quarterbacks, in terms of playing from the neck up. I’ll give him This praise.”

In the third round of Cincinnati, Ryder played a lot of football for the Bearcats, hitting a record 43-6 in a four-year start, including making it to College Football Playoff last year.

All this game time helped the rookie player transition.

“Total knowledge of the attack—I’m not going to lie, I thought I’d go in and suffer a little,” Rieder said. “We made it almost all of the installs and run all of these checks, and I have a pretty good understanding of it. It honestly surprised me. Not saying I wouldn’t have picked it up, but I thought it might take a little longer, or two extra days. I was able to pick it up quite smoothly.”

after, after trade Matt Ryan To Indy, the hawks Occurred Marcus Mariota as the veteran quarterback before Drafting Ryder in the third round. As a mid-round pick, the Atlanta can let the Novice learn from the sideline or throw him into the deep end if he’s ready.

Given the praise for gaining the mental side—usually the most challenging part of a novice’s transition—the first tee was laid for Ridder jumping Mariota at the starting party.

It will depend on how the boot camp goes, whether the beginner will start on the first day. But as for rebuilding the Falcons, it will likely be a matter of time before Ridder gets his shot. If nothing else, Atlanta needs to know if they really spot the future caller’s signal in the third round or if they’ll be in the market for another midfielder early in the 2023 draft.

It’s still early days in the process, but it’s a good start for Rider’s chances.

“He is very smartSmith said, “Obviously he has to keep getting better…but behind the scenes, there are things he did that impressed me as a rookie.”
